The Power of Baby Steps
One of the most extravagant miracles in the Hebrew Scriptures is the parting of the Red Sea. For those not familiar, this is when Moses leads the Hebrew peoples out of slavery in Egypt. After 10 Biblical plagues (including rivers of blood, frogs falling from the sky, and dead firstborns) Pharoah relents and tells the Hebrews to get out of town.
Pharaoh is fickle, however, and once the Hebrews are gone he gets a little nervous about who’s gonna do all this pyramid building with no slaves. So he pursues the Hebrews with the full force of his army and traps them against the shores of the Red Sea.
The people are frightened to death.
They yell at Moses to take them back to slavery, where at least they knew they had a grave on solid ground.
Instead, Moses raises his hand over the waters and God drives back the sea. On they go across the sea floor and the Egyptian chariots who pursue them are drowned when the water comes crashing back down.
It’s pretty dramatic as far as ancient scriptures go. In movies it’s always depicted as the climax of the action revealing the special-effects worthiness of YHWH. Moses is shown as a fearless leader with full and total faith in the power of his God. And Pharoah and the chariots are destroyed with cinematic relish.
OCTOBER SPECIAL: ANYTHING GAZA
Who hasn’t been affected by the genocide of the indigenous people in Gaza? The videos, the cries, the destruction, the global systemic injustice. It’s important to be informed, but also just as important to do whatever we can to be spiritually and emotionally healthy. Why? So each one of us can keep returning to the work of shared liberation, activism of all kinds, and staying human through inhumane times.
Book the October special for a good healing on any way you feel affected by the genocide or what’s happening in Gaza.
50% of all proceeds will be donated to the Sameer Project which is a donations based initiative, led by Palestinians in the diaspora, working to supply aid to displaced families in Gaza.
$50 for 30 minutes, no limit on uses
But I always imagine a different kind of scene.
You see, Moses never wanted to be a leader. His mother was forced to abandon him to save him from a child slaughter rampage. He had a stutter. He killed someone in anger and ran away to hide in the dusty mountains. And he begged Pharoah to just do the right thing so they could avoid all the conflict and chaos of God’s insurmountable will poured out upon the heads of the unwilling.
I think that when Moses reached the Red Sea with a watery grave in front and death at the end of a lance behind he was shaking in his ancient Hebrew boots.
There are times in our lives when we’re all in that kind of spot.
We’re surrounded by threats, less than ideal options, and sometimes real harm. People like to look back at someone who later became a hero and paint him as if he was like that from the very beginning.
But Moses at the edge of the Red Sea was not yet Moses the Eternal Prophet of God. I think he was just a man who fought a brutal enslaver because people he loved were getting hurt. I think he stretched his arm over those waters because he was scared as hell and was reaching for help.
When he reached out in a desparate Hail Maryam kind of faith, I think a little bit of dry land appeared in front of him; just enough to take one step. And then another little bit of dry land appeared and he took the next step.
In the scriptures it says it took a whole night for the waters to be parted and I imagine Moses and the Hebrews walking in the pitch black, step by terrified step, through the Valley of the Shadow of Death to freedom.
Friends, we are at the shores of the Red Sea.
Name your Pharaoh; there are dozens to choose from. Name the slavery; it’s in our prisons, modern concentration camps, and genocides. Name your Red Sea; the thing that seems impossible to cross.
And then find your inner Moses. Reach out your hand for help no matter how small the likelihood it will be answered. And look down right in front of you. Is there just a little bit of dry land where you can walk? Then take that baby step of faith in just this moment.
Yogananda says that if we take care of the minutes, the incarnations take care of themselves.
Whatever you’re facing today - politically or personally - may your minutes be blessed with the trembling courage of Moses. May your faith be rewarded with just enough dry land. May your steps add up to a journey through dark waters that leads ever upwards to freedom, safety, and life above all.
