The Endless Power of Logos
When I was 32 I had strep throat five times in one year.
It was so painful and wouldn’t go away no matter what I did. I gargled salt, I applied tea trea oil, I drank bone broth, I even took a round or two of antibiotics which, if you know me, I try to avoid at all costs.
It was hard to talk and, being a preacher, made it very hard to preach. When I had preaching dates coming up I would be consumed with worry that the strep would show up Saturday night and put me in a bind Sunday morning.
Finally one weekend I went to a healing ceremony and sat with a powerful and wise healer.
I asked him if he could help me figure out what the heck was going on with this strep. He sat in meditation for a while, sang some songs and did some healing work, then said to me: “Cindy, there’s nothing wrong with your throat, however there is a voice in your head saying that the only way you’ll be persuasive to your congregation is by speaking. But the truth I see is that singing may be much more powerful and persuasive by far.”
At that time, there was nothing I wanted more than to be a persuasive preacher. So I decided to really consider this information, even though it sounded a little ‘out there'.’

Before that moment, I had never considered myself a singer.
But I was so desperate to not have strep anymore I thought, hey what’s there to lose? And so I started to sing. At first it was just in my car as I drove from house to house during my time as a hospice chaplain. Then I sang one scratchy little song in front of a small group and it took all the courage in my heart just to make that sound.
Over the next few years I learned more songs. I started dating my now-life partner who sang harmonies to my melodies when we were cooking together. I worked with a voice teacher and purchased some online singing courses. And I began to sing for bigger and bigger groups, and in more intimate one-on-one settings as well.
I haven’t had strep since I started singing. And I’ve also been healthier than I’ve ever been before in my life.
My Christian teachers would say that I’m using the healing power of ancient Logos, the pure voice of Spirit. As St. John says:
“In the beginning was the Logos, and the Logos was with God, and the Logos was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being in him was life, and the life was the light of all people. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.”
For me, this Logos (which we translate rather flatly as the “Word”) is the unimpeachable divine sacred order of the Spirit of Life that fills the whole universe with Her melody. Whether you’re a quantum physicist, an ancient Boddhisattva, or a modern seeker you will know intuitively that the great frequency of the Universe is a song.
This is the teaching of Christ and St. John as well; that there is a life-giving power infusing all things through the Logos of Spirit, the great commandment of God that there be light in all.

This Logos/light/life/song is the great Song of Creation and it’s embedded in each one of us. It’s our very own voice.
It’s the uniquely personal and infinitely powerful noise we make when we sing. It’s the song of our highest potential and our greatest health. It’s better than an apple a day and it keeps way more than strep away.
Since I’ve begun singing, I’ve sat in dozens of singing circles and learned from some of the best singers in the world. I’ve seen songs heal everything from religious trauma to broken bones. And singing is the one thing that connects me most intimately to Spirit.
They say if you have a song to sing, you’ll never be afraid and you’ll never be alone.
So I encourage each one of you to sing your song. You need, I need it, the world needs it. Because remember that when you’re singing, you’re activating the most powerful voice that ever spoke; holy sacred Logos that brings light and life into all darkness and illuminates us all with joy.
