On Taking Advice from a Troll
It’s only a matter of time before the trolls come.
Every so often I’ll post something Christian on social media. I always aim to share some little tidbit of spiritual wisdom but I try and be judicious about the Jesus-specific stuff. Why?
Because hell hath no fury like a Christian troll. The few times I have posted about Jesus - i.e. the guy who recommends you welcome the stranger and love your neighbor - I’ll get at least a few comments about how I’m doing my religion wrong.
Most trolls are laughable, some are viscious, all seem slightly to severely misguided.
But I finally had one who, at the end of his castigation, actually gave some beautiful advice I agree with. I posted a video on Instagram recently talking about the quirky preaching advice ChatGPT had given me. You know, as a laugh, a little bit of a joke with me, ChatGPT, and Spirit.
But for some, this was no laughing matter. Enter the troll and here’s what he said:
Under attack by trolls? Let’s look at your spiritual agreements and matching pictures in a Clairvoyant Counseling session.
So obviously I went through all the emotions in the following order:
Fuck you, buddy, if you can’t take a joke!
Ok but I agree with you, why couldn’t you ask nicely?
Oh my gosh, I’ve been publicly shamed and now Christians everywhere will know I’m not a real minister?
No but seriously, some of my sermons are soooo uninspired and no Holy Spirit in sight
Wait, are you a gym rat in your early 20s?
Wait, do you even lift bro?
Have you even gone to seminary? Have you even gone to CHURCH?
Fuck you again.
Ok, I love what you say at the end there and was kind of thinking of visiting Jesus in the Cathedral of Souls (it’s near the moon) again soon anyway
And finally, hmmmm I wonder what Spirit does have to say about scripture…
So, I thought I’d take some advice and go talk to Spirit at the feet of my friend and teacher, Yeshua.
Here’s what they both said about scripture:
Never put a period where God has put a comma. This scripture is still being revealed in each human and every life you encounter. Keep your eyes peeled for the master in every human you meet today, inclduing him.
Stagnation is the primary cause of all diseases including spiritual dis-ease, and flow is the primary source of health. So Cindy, don’t get stuck here on this one troll or this one post or even/especially on your own selfrighteousness. Flow on, babe.
The journey of discovering and enforcing right and wrong is a journey every soul is entitled to have. It refines over lifetimes and you too, Cindy, were once a crusader like this young man. Probably many times. Have patience, have mercy.
It’s always a good idea to have a little laugh at ourselves, our religion, our tools, and even God. God doesn’t mind, Jesus will crack a joke at every opportunity, and it’s all just fodder for a growing soul.
We spent a good long while talking and learning together, discussing many juicy spiritual subjects.
The result of which is perhaps what Spirit intended by this chance encounter; to open my heart a little wider, to shift my perspective a little higher, and to remember that I’m doing religion just fine.
So if you, like me, have encountered some kind of spiritual troll this week or ever, just say “Hmm you might be right” like the spiritual Aikido master you are and simply return to sit at the feet of your beloved teacher, whoever she or he may be.
God will meet you there.
