“It Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time”
I won't exactly say I regret my past.
I will say there's plenty of it I'll probably never try again. Most of it, upon reflection, falls under the somewhat amusing category of "It seemed like a good idea at the time." This goes for jobs, relationships, personal choices, and decisions of all kinds.
Drink three $20 martinis in a first date in order to appear sexy and sophisticated? Seemed like a good idea at the time.
Adopt a kitten after bottomless mimosa brunch just because I didn’t want that other interested lady to adopt her? Seemed like a good idea at the time.
Pursue that totally unavailable person for years doing everything in my power to convince them that we were meant to be together? Seemed like a good idea at the time.
Step on the gas to turn left as soon as the light turned green to jump ahead of the traffic, not noticing the cop in the first row of that traffic? Seemed like a good idea at the time.
Work with that therapist who never respected his own time boundaries and in a totally flattering but unprofessional way kind of idolized me as a reincarnated Egyptian priestess? Truly, it seemed like a good idea at the time!
I could go on, but all of these decisions had one thing in common; I made them alone.
That’s right. Every single “It seemed like a good idea at the time” decisions had one common denominator. I never consulted anyone else, let alone a teacher, mentor, or friend.
I kind of blame our society for the deep currents of Manifest Destiny, Do-It-Yourself-ism and Grab-Those-Bootsraps-ology. I also blame my own youthfulness and certainty of my own infallibility - a totally normal yet often worrisome quality of the young.
And I’ll say that every troublesome decision I made eventually righted itself and I learned something valuable. That kitten is a lovely 13 year old cat who warms my lap daily. My adventures through drinking and sobriety have brought me great wisdom to guide others. And I ended up married to exactly the right person who I suspect loves me even more than I love him, though it’s really a moot point (I love him so damn much!).

What changed between those days and now?
Well first, the consequences of those kinds of decisions were deeply humbling. Periods of embarrasment and shame, followed by some kind of miraculous grace that my friends and family still loved me, and finally a spiritual path or two that connected me to something greater than myself.
In every 12-step program I’ve been in I eventually hear, “You never have to do it alone again.” Like, none of it. And I know people now who want to be involved in my life, but in a loving supportive way, not the gossipy drama way I used to surround myself with.
As one of my favorite ministers said, “You gotta have people who will tell you when you got gum on your butt.” You know who you are, gum butt friends. And I got you just the same.
And of course, there is Jesus the Christ who’s first order of business was to get 12 friends for the journey.
I’ve learned from my shamanic teachers that 12 supporters wasn’t an accident of the Bible. We actually need at least that many people right beside us to have any kind of clarity, power, or purpose at all. Today I have way more than 12 and I’ve discovered that the more there are, the better protected I am from myself.
And finally, my new favorite teacher Asha Nayaswami, talks endlessly about the value of being willing to learn from our karma; or, all of our “It seemed like a good idea at the time” choices. If I can be humble before those choices, open-hearted and tender when I face them, and stay amused and neutral as I reckon with my own consequences then I have a chance.
As a society, I think we’re about to have a collective experience of “It seemed like a good idea at the time.”
You know exactly what I’m talking about. Many of us, of course, didn’t think it would be a good idea at any time. And yet somehow we are all bound up in it together.
So all I can do is share this little bit of my experience, strength, and hope. Gather your people around. Consult your elders. Be an elder for others, even/expecially those who are making these bad decisions. Don’t drink, don’t use, stay sober. Remember that Christ/Krishni/Buddha have gone before us and are lighting the way.
And above all, stick together no matter what.

November Monthly Special - Healing Fear and Grief
They say when you give a healing you get a healing and I certainly need some of that around fear and grief. If this is you too, then the Monthly Special is a great way to get some ‘dealer’s choice’ healing.
In this 30-minute call we’ll look at any current ways fear and grief may be putting mayonnaise in your gas tank, as my teachers say. In other words, how are the energies of fear and grief jamming up your energetic system.
This is also for anyone who may be experiencing kidney or lung issues. While I’m not a medical clinician, the energies of fear and grief can often affect those organs so it can be helpful to clear them up as part of your holistic treatment plan.
This November Monthly Special is available for reciprocity offerings/trades in addition to monetary payment ($50/30 mins). Email me at rev.cindy@clairvoyantcounseling.com to arrange a reciprocity trade.
