God Make Me Like Water
Many years ago I heard prayer that I’ve never forgotten.
It was 3am and I was sitting around a fire in the desert. I was praying with many other people in an ancient way over a silver bucket full of water we would soon drink. The prayer was for the water itself and it was prayed by a man who had been lovingly tending the fire for us all night.
I don’t remember the exact words of that prayer but I don’t need to. I remember how it felt, what awoke in me, and how I have been changed ever since. He was saying to the water, in a hundred different ways, “Water, make me like you.”
He talked to the water about how it took so many forms.
He prayed about how responsive it was to every single thing around it, how it soothed and troubled and soaked and flew into the air then came down again. He talked about it’s endless path across and through the earth, across and through our bodies, and across and through our very spirits.
He spoke to the water about how if we followed it, it would always “get low, get humble” but keep going all the way to the sea. That there was nothing at all that could ever permanently stop water from fulfilling it’s destiny. Maybe temporarily it could be dammed, bottled, tanked, conserved. But it always found a way sooner or later to keep moving.
Through his prayer the water became Living Water.
I only drank half a cup as we passed the silver bucket around the circle but I still remember the taste of true water; water that has been changed by prayer, filled with spirit, and sent to remind me of who I really am.

So that is my simple prayer today. God make me like water.
Show me the crack in the dam through which I can flow.
Send the heat that will change my form so I can fly through the air in freedom.
Freeze me solid and push me across the land transforming everything in my wake for centuries to come.
Bind me with blood and pump me through the hearts of those I love and those I don’t.
Raise me to great heights so that I may see the earth from high above then drop me down again to greet the plants, the creatures, and the earth herself.
God, make me like water and keep me low, keep me humble, keep me flowing along the path of least resistance and greatest purpose.
Transform me over and over and over until I know my power in all forms.
Use me, God, to nourish every living thing in the deserts, the forests, the mountains, the plains.
Use me, God, to carve great canyons that can never be destroyed.
Remove from me all bias, any judgment that would ever say “Him, but not her.”
Teach me the power of time and persistence.
Keep me simple and steady and full of pure determination.
Illuminate that ancient truth; la muerte no es el fin.
Fill me with sparkling light.
Make me eternally receptive to whatever comes my way, and guide me, God, all the way home.
