The Worst False Idol I’ve Ever Worshipped
I love a good false idol.
You know, the kind that seems like it can fix all your problems, like it’s got the answer you’ve been waiting for, like it’s some secret elixir that’s going to change your whole life?
When I was younger that false idol was usually another person or group of people. I certainly worshipped my college girlfriend, though she was definitely unqualified for the position of Personal God and Savior. Since she was a little older than me I also worshipped her friends, who turned out to be just human after all.
In seminary I worshipped theology and my professors which definitely seemed to be a little closer to God but at the end of the day was still rather removed and academic.
I also spent almost two decades worshipping the extremely seductive false idol of alcohol herself.
Plenty to write about there so suffice it to say that alcohol ended up being an extremely deceitful false idol that almost took me for everything I had.
I’ve watched other chemicals and substances try to take the place of Queen Alcohol over the years since I quit drinking. Enough for me to realize that it wasn’t really alcohol, or girlfriends, or even charismatic seminary professors who are the problem.
Under the sway of a demanding false idol? I’ve been there. Let’s work to get you free in a Clairvoyant Counseling session.
The problem is the God-sized hole I keep trying to fill with anything but God.
My most recent anything-but-God false idol? You guessed it; the To-Do List. That’s right, as a multi-employed millenial I am currently drowning under the tyranny of a to-do list so long you’ve got to flip the page to see to the end.
I’ve got to-do lists for every aspect of my life, even prayer.
I’ve got one for house projects, one for which altars in my house need attention, one for how many ceremonial fires I’ll be burning this year, one for the garden, one for what needs to be dropped off around town that’s currently shoved in the back sea of my car, one for weekly exercise goals, one for which plants need to be watered when, one for cleaning floors, one for beating levels and bosses in Zelda, and of course one for which books to read next.
And that’s just the personal to-do lists. Just wait til we get to the astral tasks! I’ve got to work on my havingness, clear out my crown chakra, visit my pal Jesus up in the Cathedral of Souls and ask him about my next teaching, and I always love to head on up to the 12th level of the astral plane and just chill with Yogananda, Ram Dass, and God Herself from time to time.
Would you rather be speaking directly to God than a golden calf? I’ve got a few direct lines you can try in a Clairvoyant Counseling session.
But what’s really happening when I turn my life into one long booklet of to-do lists?
Every time I get to the end of the day and my to-do list isn’t finished (which is literally every day I’ve ever had a to-do list) I let that false idol undercut my worthiness just a little, just a smidgen each day. That’s the deathly power of false idols. We’re never good enough.
One of the best pieces of advice I’ve ever gotten for preaching/newslettering is to preach the thing I most need to hear this week. So friends, I most need to hear that my to-do list doesn’t determing my worthiness, that my delays in responding to texts and emails don’t make anyone love me any less, least of all God.
I need to hear that unswept floors, and unpulled weeds, and uncooked meals have nothing to say about my ultimate value to God, to myself, and even/especially to other people.
So if you’re drowning in unfinishable tasks this week, here is my prayer for you:
May you know your ultimate worthiness is unrelated to your ultimate doing-ness.
May you have ample time to visit with God in all your favorite places if only to tell a few jokes, have a few laughs, and shed some tears.
May someone make a meal for you this week, may someone sweep your floor, may someone pull your weeds.
May your heart stay light and delighted among the heaviness of productivity.
May you realize that in the end, the only to-do list that matters is how much you loved and if you remembered that the sun always shines for you.
Teachings and Workshops

HEALING THROUGH PRAYER AND PRAYING IN PICTURES - JULY 27TH 4-7PM
Spirit speaks in the language of pictures and though us humans need words to communicate, we can use those words to paint a picture of healing. This could include:
Describing a healthy flow of energy through diseased tissue
Calling in blessings of particular kinds of light
Opening pathways and removing obstacles for right work or a new career
Claiming emotional power and spiritual support for your healee
Releasing wounds and emotional scar tissue from the energy body’s matrix
