On Becoming the Woman at the Well
I love all the fierce women who show up in the Gospels.
They’re pushy, they’re spicy, they’re clever, they’re astute, and they’re usually a heck of a lot smarter than the disciples. The women are the ones that Jesus seems to have the most interesting interactions with and - of course - the ones most maligned by history.
The woman at the well is no different. Here’s the story. Jesus is on his way through some rough back country and sits by a well at noon. Nothing to us, but crucial for the times because, remember, they were in a very hot desert y’all. You can’t really be sitting outside at noon, let alone with strange women.
Nevertheless it is there that Jesus sits and encounters one of the oldest family feuds of the Hebrew peoples. This Samaritan woman comes from a part of the tribe who believes that God commanded them to worship on this mountain, while the Jews Jesus hangs with believes it’s actually this mountain over here.

It’s not common knowledge today but much blood has been spilled over this ancient holy mountain dispute.
Enough blood to poison the water. And the samaritan woman knows it. But Jesus asks her for water none-the-less. In their conversation she sasses him, chastises him, and makes demands of him before finally conceding he is indeed a prophet when he tells her he knows about her five husbands and that she’s not even married to the sixth man she’s currently with.
The illuminated subject of their conversation is Living Water and how if you’re able to drink this stuff you’ll never thirst again. In modern times, this Samaritan woman has been flattened into the slut who was too dumb to recognize Jesus.
But I don’t think Jesus cared one whit about excess husbands or holy mountains or even being recognized as your personal lord and savior. I think he just cared about helping people get free.
I think for Jesus, water is the master teaching that guides people into that eternal liberation of the soul.
I was reflecting on all this during an unexpectedly watery sabbatical. First, it rained torrentially a few times which delights my desert heart to no end. My little retreat hut was by a marsh and I heard the water splashing at night with all kinds of birds, fish, frogs, and mermaids.
We were given endless teas, steams, and other medicines obviously made from water, all drawn up from a well on the land. It was hot and I took 2 or 3 showers a day on a little outdoor platform overlooking the marsh.
There had recently been a flood in the area and signs of the receding water were everywhere including watermarks 2 feet above the floor of our forest huts. And I had more than a few beautifully unnerving water dreams.
Unbekownst to me, all this water was beginning to heal some very unwatery things within me.
Namely fire and separation. During these three weeks of reflection and unexpected immersion I reviewed some of the deepest places within me where I still held anger, resentment, and grudges. Setting aside the details, the water showed me that the heart of these things was separation and death. No Living Water to be found.
I saw that, like the Samaritan woman, I had been drinking water from a well that would never quench my thirst. Living Water, as Christ so elegantly insisted on, is about recognizing that there is no difference between this holy mountain and that one.
Living Water is about realizing that in fact it’s impossible to separate the waters that flow through me from then flowing through my enemies, try though I might.
The nature of water, in a very literal sense, is indisciminatory. I couldn’t stop it from flowing through my personal sworn enemies no matter the power of my judgment and grudge.
Despite my best efforts I was becoming this woman at the well.
And this is extremely annoying right at this point in history because a shamefully large part of me wants my political enemies to die of terrible thirst and quickly. And I’m sure they want the same for me.
Nevertheless, Living Water doesn’t work that way. If I drink it - and I certainly try to - then my enemies drink it as well by default. There is no separating the Waters of Life that flow across the land, through me and the frogs, up through the atmosphere, and down as rain into the bottles and glasses of those on the other side of the protest lines.
My mission, as I discovered on sabbatical, is to be a clear channel for the water as it comes through my life; blessing it, healing it, restoring it, and cleansing it so that as it flows from me to you it becomes the Living Water for which we all so desperately thirst.
Interview with Shaman’s Directory
I had a wonderful conversation with Wake Wheeler from Shamans Directory and I've just been loving the deep work and high integrity I've encountered with this org.
They promote and support primarily indigenous healers and folks with direct teachers in a living tradition. There are a LOT of healers out there, not all of them in integrity even though the social media looks good, and Shamans Directory is doing the sometimes slow and always dedicated work of ensuring folks have a tradition.
Have a tradition, folks! It's so worth it. And enjoy the interview.
