The Promise of Lent in the Wilderness of Fascism

(Personal note: The increasing speed of our political chaos has somehow also brought to me treasure troves of fantastic new theology. Each sentence in here has about 8-10 hours of spiritual conversation behind it. If anything catches your eye just know that you can always use one of my 15-minute complimentary calls to go deeper. I freaking love talking theology and want to hear your thoughts.)

Lent is upon us, and it couldn’t be more timely.

I say this because it seems as if Evil has been loosed upon the world (again). Now, I usually don’t go for Devil talk. I’m more of a modern theologian who thinks of ‘evil’ as just the result of unhealed childhood abuse, or scarce commnity resources, or historical oppression. You know, explainable stuff.

And there are certainly explainable reasons for everything happening now. Primarily, the greed of young souls who don’t know they’re just going to reincarnate into their own sh*t pile next time around. That and the insane history of colonialism.

But what is the actual root of that colonizer impulse?

Maybe it is all those explainable reasons. But my viewpoint has recently been shifted by a new course I’m taking called “Relating with Evil and Malice” by Dr. Daniel Foor.

Like I said, I usually ignore this kind of subject but the instructor is grounded in some of the most ancient wisdom traditions on Earth and seems convinced that it’s not all good stuff out there.

Of the many valuable insights I’ve learned so far, two stand out. The first is that humans are limited beings and we might do well to humble ourselves before forces more powerful, more ancient, and more intelligent than us. Not that they’re better, just that we’re still growing.

The second is that just as there are beings and forces that delight in human flourishing, there are those that truly enjoy chaos and harm. Daniel Foor teaches that it serves us to be honest with that fact.

The evil we are facing right now seems to be the same Christ faced in the wilderness.

That is, the evil of individual comfort enforced by increasing destruction of others. Why do I call this evil (beyond the obvious)? Because we are souls on an Earth school meant to grow and expand beyond our comfort zone of individuality into the completely non-personal reality of Oneness with Spirit, in short.

And right now the individual comforts of the very very few are being safeguarded, defended, and brutally protected at the expense of literally everything and everyone else. These are the exact same individual comforts offered by the dang Devil himself after Christ was baptized and went to test the strength of his newly baptized soul in the wilderness.

Here are the three temptations the Devil offers Jesus in the desert.

First, he pushes Jesus to use his personal power to turn stones into bread, which is a metaphor for the comforts of the temporary physical body. Now, I’m all for people having enough food and water and a roof over there head. What the Devil offers is endless physical comfort in exchange for the true food of communion with God. No thanks, says Christ.

Second, he offers the power to be worshipped and revered in the temple of Jerusalem. No small offer as the wealthy, comfortable and corrupt priest caste could attest. Ahem, prosperity ministers, I’m looking at you.

Finally he offers Jesus all the power in the world if he’ll just do the Devil the small favor of worshipping him instead of God.

Details aside, what the Devil is tempting Jesus with is personal power.

It is a microscopic leap to see that exact temptation run amok in our world today. And no leap at all to see what a Devil’s bargain it is.

Here’s the other thing from this scripture I noticed. The Devil only comes to Jesus after he has fasted for 40 days and is hungry and weak. Who these days is not hungry in a deep way? Who has not been weakened by the degradation and loss and war happening all around?

We often imagine Jesus as a super hero, dispensing of the Devil with panache and power.

I think he actually used the very last of his strength to resist these temptations, which shows how much more powerful he truly is than the multi-billionaires who are currently trading the life of the planet itself for a few short decades of questionable individual comfort.

Now what is the promise of Lent in all this?

It is that if you, entering this modern wilderness where the Devil plays, can remember that Life itself and Spirit eternal are more important than any temptation of personal power then you too will receive the ministry of angels. For thus it was written in the ancient scrolls, “Then the devil left Him, and behold, angels came and ministered to Him.”

As the Christ lives in all of us, may you receive this holy blessing in every moment and may your Lenten practice awaken you to our collective sacred Life on this beautiful planet.
