Christianity has a Pronoun Problem
I used to live in the Mission District in San Francisco.
I was there to party and figure out my next steps after seminary, but it was - ironically - one of the most religious places I’ve ever lived. In addition to the invading tech bros, the artists and anarchists, and the enormous queer community, there was the Mission itself.
I’m referring of course to the Mission Dolores basilica founded by the Spaniards in 1776 to convert the indigenous Ohlone people to Catholicism. In 2015, when I lived in the city, a good chunk of San Franciscos population were still Catholic, mostly Latino and Chicano folks.
On busy street corners in the Mission you’d often find someone with a megaphone and pamphlets shouting about Christianity.
In particular they wanted you to take Jesus as your Lord and savior. Actually, as your personal Lord and savior.
There were always threats of the end times and a reminder of all the trouble we’d be in if Jesus returned today and saw what a bunch of sinners we were…like he ever had trouble with sinners in the first place.
But the primary thing was an individualized relationship with Jesus-the-man as a way to my own personal salvation and the rest of you be damned. I never heard much talk of Christ the eternal Consciousness coming from those San Francisco street corners. Can you see my bias showing?
NEW COURSE! THE FOUNDATIONS OF HOW TO BE A HEALER
Starts April 7th, offered in-person and virtually
A course designed to give you the tools needed to provide effective, powerful, lasting healings for yourself and your clients. We’ll cover practices to help hone your skills, develop ‘shamanic certainty’, and truly enjoy your healing work.
The Jesus of scripture was a one-time personality; a human who existed once for 33ish years.
Christ, his true being, always has and always will exist and merely shone out through the temporary ego structure of Jesus long enough to share some good news and be on his way. And what is it to be a Christ? The word simply means ‘anointed’ and refers to the union of one’s individual consciousness (a convincing illusion of separation) with the anointing light of eternity.
The problem is that we’ve latched onto that temporary ego structure instead of the real thing, and insisted that Jesus is THE ONE. But even Jesus himself, speaking with the voice of a Christed being didn’t say that. He spoke always of himself as an eternal, impersonal truth.
There are seven “I am..” statements in the Gospels.
Jesus said I am…
the bread of life
the light of the world
the door of the sheep
the good shepherd
the resurrection and the life
the way, the truth, and the life
the true vine
Now the interesting thing here is the verb tense that Jesus the man uses to indicate he’s speaking from the Christed place. The ‘I am’ that Jesus uses - ego eimí in Greek - is omnitemporal. It indicates that the verb is active and true at all times. In other words Jesus is actually saying “I am, I was, and I will be the light of the world.”
It reminds me of the ancient Hindu definition of God - sat chit ananada - or ever-existing, ever-new bliss.
This eternal being is who I work with when I do healings.
No matter what my personality is up to, no matter how controlling my ego is that day, no matter how convinced my client is of their story, I always and only do healing work from this eternal sat chit ananda Christ realm.
This is the realm where all healing is possible through pure forgiveness, where each person is timeless and fully awake, where together we fulfill the great promise of Christ, “All this you shall do and more.”
Now I know that sounds super esoteric but here’s the practical side of healing from the Christ realm.
All it takes to access it is a moment of meditation with each client to see them as a pure, unblemished, eternally alive soul. When I take this moment the rest of the healing takes care of itself.
When I remember that this being who has come to sit in front of me for a healing is in truth the great I AM then all healing becomes possible, as Jesus and Christ taught.
You have no idea what a powerful healer you will become when you see everyone and everything with the eyes of Spirit. This practice is the foundational practice I’m teaching in How to be a Healer. You probably intuitively already know how to do it but I want to give you some practical tools that will help you every time.
For more on that, keep reading! And until next time: May you remember who you truly are - ever-existing ever-new bliss just having a good old fashioned romp in a sweet little human body. God bless!
The Foundations of How to be a Healer - April 7th thru May 5th in person and online
