The Gospel of the Eagle’s Eye
On my first day in seminary, a new neighbor read to me from the Gospel of John.
At the time I thought this neighbor was a little zealous, though I humored him to be polite. If you’re not familiar, it’s the Gospel that starts:
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.” (King James version for old times sake)
I truly had no idea what I was hearing at the time; one of the trippiest, most metaphysical ancient scriptures I’ve ever read.
But back then, all I heard were some non-sensical and super dry Christian ‘beliefs’ that had nothing to do with me. I was at seminary to learn…who knows what exactly, but it sure wasn’t the boring Bible.
In fact I’m sure I tried a few times to skip those required classes on the basis of being a Unitarian Universalist student and thus only in need of learning Earth-based practices. Alas, they forced me to take Bible classes and I discovered just how wrong I was, especially about John.

First of all, John is spiritually ruthless which I love.
The whole Gospel is more or less about doing away with our attachment to the great illusion of reality and waking up to the mind-breaking immanence of God within and all around.
I say ruthless because the Jesus of this Gospel doesn’t really heal out of compassion, or uplift the poor out of care, or tell any parables with the loving guidance of the other Gospels.
John’s Jesus is here for one thing and one thing only; opening the portals to eternity.
And what I love about this Gospel’s perception of eternity is how effing fierce it is. John’s eternity is an all encompassing, terrifying, awe inspiring, and Roman empire crumbling kind of reality in a you-better-get-right-with-Spirit kind of way. No wonder they killed the guy!
So in my own delight with spiritual clarity and honesty I’ve really grown to love the Gospel of John over the years. It’s a powerful gnostic-like metaphysical trip written by someone(s) who has the kind of insane details that say they might have actually been there.
I just can’t get enough!
So imagine my surprise when, after all these years, I learned something new about the Gospel of John.
Here’s how it happened. When I took over in my current position as Pastor of a nursing facility, the previous Pastor left a ton of religious books behind. Many of these I keep as no more than scholarly decoration because they’re full of the kind of pinched and sexist theology popular in the 50s.
But one afternoon in desperation to find a bible study topic I cracked open a book called “The Daily Study Bible Series of the Gospel of John.” Yes I know; only a nerd like me would go for a book like that.
And yet the very first page told me something that brought everything I love about John into focus.
You see, each Gospel writer is associated with an animal. Matthew the lion for seeing Jesus as the Messiah savior lion king of Judah. Mark the man for being plain and straightforward. Luke the ox for seeing Jesus as a being of service and sacrifice.
And John the eagle because (get this!) the eagle alone was believed to be able to look right into the sun without being blinded and John “has the most penetrating gaze of all the New Testament writers into the eternal mysteries and the eternal truths and the very mind of God.” WUT.

Be still my shamanic heart!
In some of the Turtle Island traditions the eagle is considered to be the most holy bird because it flies highest and closest to Spirit. And here we have the Gospel of the Eagle’s Eye perceiving Spirit without flinching and dropping us right into the blessed mysteries of Christ Consciousness and true Eternal Life.
Since I finally learned why John is the eagle in all those classic depictions I basically can’t talk to anyone for more than five minutes without mentioning it. So expect to hear more.
But for now, may you be blessed with that same sacred perception.
May your sight penetrate straight to the center of the heart of Spirit and may you see your reflection there.
May illumined eternity be revealed to you as the already/not yet reality that is our only and final destination.
May your consciousness grow with the light of the holy Word, the sacred Logos, which divinely orders the cosmos and everything in it.
And though the darkness may surround us, let it never comprehend, encompass, or extinguish the brilliant light within.
