Thank GOD Jesus Wasn’t Christian

TL;DR - The Gospel of John isn’t Christian either and is actually a powerful anti-Christo-fascist empire-destroying tool that I’ll be teaching all about in my new workshop “The Gospel of John Unbound.” See you there!

Last week my husband asked me the question we’re all asking about many modern Christians.

How can they call themselves Christians and yet act so very un-Christian?

How can they insist that the Gospels are the literal word of God then celebrate when the foreigner is imprisoned instead of welcomed, when the children are sexually abused instead of treasured as our greatest teachers, when women are denied life-saving health care instead of healed of all that ails them?

In other words, are we even reading the same book?

There’s not really one answer for why brutally violent hypocrisy seems to be the soup du jour of many modern Christians.

But I do know that even in the scriptures Jesus was facing the same thing. Boy oh boy did he have words for the religious elite who let their people suffer to fulfill some religious rule. Please note, I’m using the phrase the ‘religious elite’ and not the ‘Jewish people’ because Jesus makes that distinction very clearly on multiple occasions.

Jesus was pretty clear that it didn’t matter what faith or peoples you were from; if you used your religion or culture as a reason to deny care to anyone but especially those on the margins, you were doing it wrong. You were being a big fat hypocrite.

As I pondered Jimi’s question and discovered I didn’t really have an answer, I decided to find one.

So let’s start from the beginning. Not Jesus and the holy Logos but the beginning of what might now be called Christianity. Come with me to 325 AD.

The Roman empire was vaaaast. Like way big. It stretched from the western-most tip of modern Spain, covered all the British Isles, cruised through the middle of Europe out to the Caspian sea, then swooped down through the Middle East and wrapped around the northern coast of Africa from Egypt to Morocco.

And if was chock full of ‘pagans.’ One of the agreements Romans made when they conquered people was that they could keep their religion as long as they behaved. No uprising against your conquerors and you get to keep your Gods.

But by the early-300s this giant pagan mish-mash of an Empire (including all the Greek and Roman Gods) was getting unruly.

In 324 Constantine had just conquered another Roman ruler, Licinius, to become the sole Roman emporer and he needed to consolidate his power lickety split or this vast territory was going to fracture apart and descend into chaos.

So he decided to bind the people under one of the most powerful unifying forces on earth; religion. Hence the Council of Nicea in 325.

The Council appeased the recently conquered Eastern Bishops, established Christianity as a state-run religion, and saved the empire for another 150 years.

In other words, modern Christianity and Catholicism have their very roots in Empire consolodating itself. The roots are made up of power enforcing itself, religious oppression, cultural homogeneity, and the quashing of diverse spiritual beliefs.

Now a lot has happened since then and there have been maybe thousands of Christainities over the millenia, but knowing the root can help answer the question, “Why are so many Christians such terrible hypocrites?” It's because, as Yogananda says, they’re probably not practicing Christianity but Churchianity.

They’re probably not actually following the teachings of Christ, but the teachings of the Church’s interpretations of the teachings of Christ.

And as Empire seeking Christo-fascism destroys this land and her peoples yet again, we must remember that Jesus was never Christian.

He was an indigenous mystical Jewish enlightened master who likely came from a very esoteric sect of Judaism known as the Essenes. And he actively worked against any and all kind of religious supremacy, elitism, greed, and consolidation of political power.

THIS is exactly why I’m teaching the Gospel of John this year.

Because by some ding dang miracle that totally anti-Christian text has survived 2000 years as one of the four Trojan Horses of scripture.

It’s the blueprint for liberation from religion. It’s the truth of your own spiritual nature. It’s a map to personal freedom and instructions for how to create a community of seekers devoted to each other’s enlightenment.

It’s quite simply astounding when you actually read it. So join me if you feel like this empire business has got to go.

Join me if you want to learn directly from the original trickster, the master of liberatory forgiveness, and the one whose energy lives within us all; not in a Jesus-as-your-Lord-and-Savior kind of way but as the unfuckwithable light of Spirit that changes everything when we least expect it.

See you there.
