Christ: The Greatest Guru on Earth

I remember my first encounter with the idea of a guru.
During 2019 in my shamanic studies program we were learning how to recognize when someone had been taken in by a controlling guru, and what to do about it if they were asking for help getting their spiritual sovereignty back.
Now, there are as many ways to be a ‘guru’ as there are people. And, true to form, us Westerners have coopted the word guru to simply mean someone who is good at something,
We’ve got tech gurus, food gurus, exercise gurus, and pedophile gurus (sorry, couldn’t help myself). These are just kind of a trendy way to refer to experts.
Then there are the gurus who actually have some spiritual power, if not the spiritual maturity.
These are folks who lead cults, get others to drink kool aid in the jungle, and empty people’s wallets so they can buy private jets as proof of their advanced spiritual state (🙄). Our teachers also warned us about powerful folks in the indigenous traditions who don’t have white ayahuasca-seeking tourists’ best interests at heart.
Although Westernized folks often laugh at the idea of dark sorcerers, we were told, more or less, '“Laugh at your own peril.”
Indeed, I’ve seen some brutal spiritual handiwork brought back from naive forays into the Peruvian jungle, the ancient Southwest deserts of the US, and some less-than-savory Costa Rica retreats where people search for healing from West Aftrican psychedelic plants.
But this is just one end of the guru spectrum.
On the far other end are enlightened beings who’ve committed their lives, their very souls, to helping folks realize God. NBD.
The word guru comes from a Sanskrit root word gur- meaning to uplift. It also refers to the inner light we all carry that gurus are trying to show us.
The true purpose of a guru is to transmit their own God/Self-realized consciousness to you and to help you along because the path to enlightenment is actually waaaaaaay too far to go on your own. They also protect us from ourselves and our own self-inflicted karma boomeranging back our way.
Asha Nayaswami, grand-disciple of guru master Yogananda, describes it this way. As we go through our lifetimes, we create a ton of karma which can be most succinctly described as “I thought it was a good idea at the time.”
In other words, karma is simply not knowing the difference between what brings us lasting joy and what causes suffering. Oops.
Now because of the “thwarting crosscurrents of ego” we can do immense harm but then kick our karma can way down the road. It could be a hundred hundred lifetimes before we experience the effects of our own karma.
In those lifetimes we may have grown tremendously (God I hope so) and so when our karma comes back we may have already learned the karmic lesson some other way. But it might still be really painful karma. Like lose a limb or life or family member or inherited fortune kind of painful. This is where the guru comes in.
Asha Nayaswami describes the guru like Earth’s protective atmosphere, or even the Sun’s radiative heliosphere.
Both of these forces surround the earth in a protective field that keep asteroids, moons, other planets, and all manner of space debris from destroying us.
The radiative consciousness of the guru is that same protection for our soul. Through their lifetimes of growing awareness, facing the hard lessons of their own karma, and finally discovering that only Spirit is real, the gurus offer us the threaded needle path through self-created suffering and out into the field of liberation.
They offer us protection from our selves and this is where Jesus comes in.

Jesus is the heart of the most widespread guru-based faith on Earth; Christianity.
How often have we heard “Jesus saves!” or “Jesus my Lord and Savior!” Jesus saves us from what. From ourselves, goshdangit! Our own karma, bad decisions, fuck ups, I-thought-it-was-a-good-idea-at-the-time ideas, and all sorts of other ego driven dead ends.
Jesus comes as God-Realized (“I and the Father are one”) Christ consciousness to share that with us, to wrap it around our own tiny minds, to help us find lasting joy and to let go of everything that causes our own isolation and prolonged suffering. He’s trying to move us along the path, fer chrissakes.
As Fr. Richard Rohr reminds us, Jesus never asked us to worship him. He encouraged us to do as he did, AND MORE! Sheesh. What a guy.
