Roe V. Wade: The Worst Thing is not the Last Thing
In the wake of the Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe V. Wade yesterday I offer you this blessing.
May you know that - as Christ taught us between the cross and the tomb - the worst thing is not the last thing.*
Remember that Mary Magdalene is with you, always witnessing and teaching us how to not look away, how to keep the lamp of our hearts lit no matter the darkness outside, and how to tend to the most painful thing with sacred anointing oils and love. Remember that more shall always be revealed, the story is far from over, God is still speaking, and never put a period where She has put a comma.
May you know that there is a river of activists, truth tellers, money givers, grandmothers and grandfathers, singers, dancers, doctors, nurses, and many many many ministers of all faiths who are showing up, for you, in this very moment. Know that there have been women and men across time and space who have held the truth and sanctity of a women’s sacred right to choose above whatever decisions any earthly court can make and who have made a way in the wilderness for those in need.
May you know that your grief and pain is not in vain, that Spirit rewards those who risk their truth, and grief is the truth and proof of Love above all.
May you know that your grief is evidence of that Love; of how much you love life, and women, and yourself, and children, and choice and everything else on this abundant unending Earth.
Remember, remember, the worst thing is not the last thing. God is with you. Spirit is alive. More is coming. Your hope is never in vain and so take this blessing, take whatever nourishment you need, take the love of friends and family, take the anger and outrage and feed it to your hope. Keep the flame of your hope alive, stay in that river of ancient support, and keep your eye on Spirit, no matter what happens next.
You are all very much in my heart. May it be so.
*Thank you to Revs. Reagan Humber and Nadia Bolz-Weber for this teaching
As always, the work of providing safe abortion care has existed since there were people, so have faith that this powerful access work is already going strong.
This article in the New York Times - “Mad About Roe? Here’s How to Help Women Now.” written by Robin Marty, author of Handbook for a Post-Roe America- can provide you with some quick action steps to take this weekend.
Personally, I became a member of the National Network of Abortion Funds and will make a monthly donation going forward to help women with limited funds across the country get access to safe abortions.
