Radio WGOD: The Bunny and the Monks
Donate to the Good Bunny Foundation, which is a San Juan-based non-profit founded by Puerto Rican artist Bad Bunny in 2018 to improve the quality of life for underserved youth in Puerto Rico. The foundation empowers children through arts, sports, and music, funding annual toy drives, summer camps, and, infrastructure restoration like baseball fields.
I had no idea how much I needed this week.
I knew I wanted to watch the Benito Bowl simply because I was curious what he would do in response to…um…everything. What I didn’t expect was how much it would make me feel things I hadn’t felt in a long time.
I didn’t get to watch it live which was actually a blessing, because on Sunday night I knew that Bad Bunny everything would be alllllll over social media. Boy, was it ever, and I dove right in.
Where to even begin with this smorgasbord of joy?
First, the non-stop political commentary highlighting resilience and the kind of justice people make for themselves when legal justice is denied. And then we have Ricky Martin with a skin care routine for the ages singing about what happened in Hawai'i, and to him. Not to mention the abundant sugar cane which just about sums up the brutal greed of American Imperialism (see Kara Walker).
And Bad Bunny himself? A king soul (Michael Teachings folks?) with dance moves to make the angels swoon. Republicans already wrote to the FCC asking them to investigate this performance citing the fact that children were exposed to and “forced to endure” sexual material.
I beg of you, PLEASE expose your children to this performance.
All I could see was resilient, multi-generational, loving (there was a wedding, for chrissakes), powerful, really really fun joy happening on that football field. Given to us, almost for free, by folks who have been targeted and terrorized in the past however many years despite the enormous life-saving, money-making, culture-creating influence they’ve had on this country.
Fun side note: Duolingo reported a 35% increase in Spanish language learners the night of the Superbowl.
The best part, of course, was Bad Bunny reminding us that “America” is actually two whole continents.
Seeing all those flags running onto the field as Bad Bunny recited every country in North and South America reminded me of something I desperately needed reminding of; the resistance is incredibly strong, unspeakably ancient, and has roots deeper than anyone knows.
Watching these videos, reading all the excellent commentary, discovering so many easter eggs, and actually getting up and dancing after a long season of feeling frozen in terror, well, I cried a lot this week.
Then we have those monks, walking for peace.
They started in Fort Worth on October 26th and ended up at the Lincoln Memorial on Tuesday. To conclude they hosted a 3-hour livestream meditation on Wednesday which was POWERFUL. I tuned in for the last hour of it and even though I’m not really that woo (yeah, hard to believe but it’s true) I felt it.
So after a week of tearing up at Bad Bunny videos I went ahead and cried with the monks too. Actually I’ve been crying all along the way watching them touch so many people with their simple presence (and I just cried again right now re-watching them enter DC).
At the end of their meditation the monks gave some advice about how to keep joy and peace in our hearts. They said that now we all walk for peace and must walk together but I cried because I just didn’t want them to be done.
It’s been a long few months (plus all the years that led up to them).
I didn’t realize until all the tears this week - and I’m talking like everything from misty eyes to ugly cries - how much I needed them, how much I needed joy, how much I needed hope.
I’m reminded of an old timer I met once in the rooms of AA. He always used to say, “Remember kids, always make sure you’re tuned in to W Geeee Ohhhh Deeeeeeeee!” And then he’d laugh like a maniac who knew the secrets of the universe.
This week Bad Bunny and the good monks did for me what I forgot to do for myself.
They tuned me right in to WGOD and the signal came through loud and clear. It was vibrant. It was magnetic. It was encouraging and loving and powerful beyond belief.
And now that I’m tuned in again, I’m sticking with this channel for as long as I can. One of my favorite teachers always says that God’s true nature is bliss, and the inherent nature of bliss is an irresistable desire to share itself.
So as we continue calling, protesting, fighting, speaking up, and helping our neighbors stay safe in whatever way we can, I’m gonna do it with courageous bliss. In every encounter, all my relations, each prayer, and no matter where I go, I’ve got the Bunny and the monks coming in strong.
Irrepresable bliss and joy to you, dear friends.
