November 1st brings us a potent mix of portals.
You’ve got All Saint’s day when Christian folks remember those who have lived lives of unusual faith, both known and unknown. The spooky liturgical phrase they use is the “great cloud of witnesses gathered roundabout” which always makes me wonder who’s watching from the rafters.
For Celtic and European pagan lineages it’s the New Year’s Samhain tradition when the barrier between the spirit world and our world thins. People light great bonfires and wear costumes to scare the spirits away. Then they carry bonfire coals back to their home hearths for protection against the winter cold.
In my shamanic tradition November 1st marks the entry of the Spirit of the North. This spirit is luminous darkness, power, right timing, and being a wise elder around the fire as the elements challenge us to bundle up against the cold.
As I prepare for this three-fold holiday, I find myself thinking of Mother Mary.
There are five Christian churches within four blocks of my new house. Two of them are actually diretly adjacent to the property, a fact which I find amusingly ironic. Some of the more religious neighbors have already begun putting Christmas decorations up, including the now-classic sign “Remember the Reason for the Season.”
They mean Jesus, of course, but as we step into the great cloud of witnesses, spirits, and creatures of the dark I’m realizing Jesus isn't the reason for the season at all.
He’s got his own important season (Easter, duh) but the darkness belongs to his Mother, the incredible woman who had such faith in herself and her own inner Spirit that she brought forth a liberated and Christed being into a world dominated by smallness and fear.
