Havingness and the Heart Chakra

Art by Rithika Merchant

Valentines day is coming soon! I’m sure your aware as it’s one of the top marketed holidays in this country. I always like to remind people that St. Valentine got his head chopped off for his beliefs so do with that what you will as you’re buying chocolates this year.

But what I really want to talk about is the heart, specifically the heart chakra. This chakra, or energy center, sits in the middle of your chest right over your sternum and is powered by the electrical currents of the heart, lungs, and sinoatrial node. Ever heard of that node before? Some say it’s where the very light of the Universe enters our body with every heart beat.

In Wikipedia terms, the sinoatrial node is “a group of cells known as pacemaker cells, located in the wall of the right atrium of the heart. These cells can produce an electrical impulse (action potential) that travels through the electrical conduction system of the heart, causing it to contract.” In other words, it’s your heart beat!

What is our heart beat? It’s the electrical current that thrills the blood and hustles it through the veins and arteries. It’s our birthright as living beings on this earth. It’s how we know we’re alive. Its absence the tell-tale sign of when a spirit has departed the body. It’s the place where the magnetic pulse of Love itself enters our body and feeds us every moment of every day of our lives.

Another function of this astounding heart energy is that it fills us with the will to live. This can take many forms; pure survival, striving for a better life, repairing and mending relationships, forgiving others and opening our hearts again, living in gratitude, and of course loving ourselves.

This is what the great teachers call ‘havingness’. This loving and even liking ourselves. The truth is we’ve got to start there, as many a therapist will tell you, because loving ourselves is the Alpha and Omega of havingness. You can’t have anything else in your life until you get to have yourself as you are; flaws, needs, wants, neuroses, beauties, downfalls, blind spots, dreams, and everything else.

So there’s plenty of ways to work on that heart chakra, that energetic havingness magnet built right into your chest. To start, just notice with every heart beat the electric rainbow light of the universe pumping into your body. It never hurts to put a hand on your heart and affirm that great cosmic truth , “I am here.” And finally, one of the most fool proof methods for self-love is actually rather selfless; being of true service to others.

So wherever you find yourself in this leadup to Valentine’s day, be good company for yourself. Whether your partnered, divorced, separated, looking, desperately looking, or just enjoying your own good self, know that you can always increase your havingness. From there, the world is your oyster. You can have it all.

Need Help with Havingness?

I definitely needed help with havingness when I started my conscious spiritual journey in this life. In fact, I kind of found my spiritual path through the back door of self-hatred and self-dislike.

So most of my services are all about sharing what I can with people who are on a path like mine. In other words, my hope is that all my clients walk away from my sessions with that deep sense of havingness for themselves, their sacred path, and their connection to spirit.

This work can take many forms including:

  • Clearing old programming from your parents or society about how, who, when, what, or where it is appropriate to love

  • Working through the trauma of conservative religious upbringing and all the damage that can do (I know I don’t have to tell you)

  • Restoring a connection with the God/Spirit of your own heart so you walk confidently in the world knowing that you have support

  • Looking at your needs and wants for a relationship and helping you get clear on how those inform your boundaries and requests

So what are some reasons you might want to work with me?

  • You’re emotionally stuck on something that happened years ago and need a good healing

  • You’re in a spiritual drought/wilderness and need a guide to help you back to your path (or show you that you have actually been on your path all along!)

  • You could be curious about Christ or Jesus for the first time, or be ready to heal a childhood wound with Christianity and need some spiritual counseling

  • You’re just a nerd like me and want to learn more about the Mystical nature of God and Spirit and want some good teachings for a long drive

  • You just need a sacred witness for a very deep grief or pain
