Forgiveness and Hope are Time Travel
This weekend I read a book I thought was a fun romantic time travel romp but was actually about when we break our hearts out of fear of our own desires.
The book is “The Ministry of Time” writen by Kaliane Bradley whose main character is assigned to chaperon Graham Gore, an actual 19th century Arctic explorer. In the book, Gore was supposed to die on the ice in the ill-fated Terror/Erubus expedition but was instead plucked out of his time and dropped in modern day London by a top secret time travel device.
Obviously romantic hijinks ensue and they’re actually pretty sweet, up until the point that shit gets real and the trauma of genocide, mixed-raced identities, global warming, and government agencies get involved.
The most painful aspect of this book was the self-betrayal of the unnamed main character; unnamed, perhaps, so we see ourselves in her.
Believe me, I had plans Saturday afternoon but ended up stuck to the couch as I watched the main character totally blow up her own future.
Boy oh boy, can I relate in ways both large and small. The official term for it is ‘self-sabotage’ and us humans are superb at it. I, like this main character, have had many a forehead slap moment, many times stuck in the 'all is lost’ plot point of my life, and many a heavy heart as I realize that I’ve sabotaged myself yet again.
But this author really knows what she’s doing and so after devastating her poor reader she ended the book with a glimmer of far off hope and this sweet little paragraph:
“Forgiveness, which takes you back to the person you were and lets you reset them. Hope, which exists in a future in which you are new. Forgiveness and Hope are miracles. They let you change your life. They are time travel.”
Forgiveness and Hope are core components of my upcoming How to Lead Ceremony course and ceremony itself, if you know what to look for. First cohort starts October 14th.
I’ve long suspected - and the great masters agree - that time is an illusion.
But this doesn’t mean I don’t feel its effects; chiefly resentment and anger about the past, and fear and anxiety about the future. So it’s a blessing to me every time I dip back into the eternally refreshing teachings of forgiveness and hope, whether it arrives in the form of ancient scrolls or the new fiction section of the Denver Public Library.
Forgiveness and Hope are the reminders that I have divine permission to grow and evolve.
They tell me that nothing I’ve done to myself or others disqualifies me from love, care, or even just trying again. Forgiveness is deep tenderness towards a past self who thought she was doing her best, and Hope is a bright star that guides my ship at night, even if the night is very black.
So my hope for you this week is that you try out these miraculous tools of time travel, that your own self-tenderness is bottomless and your little star in the night is true. Most of all I wish for you to know that you have permission to change, grow, and try again no matter how many times it takes. I’ll surely meet you there.
Ready to create more forgiveness and hope for yourself and others? Ceremonies are FANTASTIC ways to do that. Join us this fall for How to Lead Ceremony.
