The last alcohol I drank was gin and tonics at a Valerie June concert in San Francisco on December 4th, 2017.

I had “quit” drinking earlier that summer but then started drinking again on my birthday in September. I mean, Adam was in town and there was a great rooftop party at Vinyl and honestly I was feeling really good and wanted to go out. To like, celebrate my not drinking.

As any addict knows, your addiction picks right back up where you left it. So after my little summer break from alcohol I didn’t go back to the good old days of teenage fun and silly games in someone’s parent’s kitchen while they were out of town. No, September through December 2017 were fucking miserable.

So I knew I needed to try again. But not before one last hurrah.

This upcoming trip to San Francisco with my friends seemed like the perfect opportunity. I’ll be honest, we did have fun. And the night of the concert I gave myself permission to have as much of any kind of alcohol I wanted to have.

What did I choose? Well gin and tonic with lime. For those of you not familiar with bars, well liquor (as in the easy access well in front of the bar where cheap alcohol sits, not like health and wellness well) is crap.

I got as much of a sugar hangover as I did an alcohol hangover and not even those insanely greaasy bacon-wrapped hot dogs they sell at 2am on the streets of SF could undo the damage.

I was laughing about this with my husband recently.

Back in 2017 I knew I was going for a last hurrah and wanted to treat myself . But couldn’t possible imagine that treating myself meant a nice bottle of wine, 70-year old scotch, or even just the top shelf gin.

No, treating myself simply meant getting as drunk as possible. That was the best I could come up with when alcohol was in my life. My big hurrah? Let’s just say I had a rather limited imagination.

SAMPLE COURSE

I was thinking about this recently as I was burning copal in our house.

Copal is this delicious tree resin found primarily in Mexico and used in Indigenous and Catholic ceremonies alike. There are dozens and dozens of different kinds of copal that vary based on the kind of tree it’s harvested from.

Over my years and journeys I’ve collected a lot of copal, some honestly better than others. Some is gifted copal from that crappy hippy shop outside of Colorado Springs, you know the one. Some is from little towns in the Mexican desert harvested in someone’s backyard. Some is from a strange back-alley shaman shop in Cusco, Peru that’s black and crackles when it burns. And some is simply from the personal stash of my indigenous teachers and all that matters is that it’s passed through their holy hands.

When I was drinking, everything was well liquor.

I settled for well quality friendships, romances, jobs, living situations, food, hobbies, you name it. But over eight years of very interesting sobriety, something has changed. I don’t drink well liquor anymore, in any form. I go for the very best first.

As I was waiting for my little coal to heat up enough to burn copal I looked at all the colorful bowls on my altar filled with different kinds of resin. I remembered that I used to save the best stuff - the translucent white copal - for some unknown future need. Translation; it never got burned.

Now, I burn it in huge chunks - just because it’s a Wednesday morning - until the coal is subsumed under the bubbling resin. Eight years of sobriety have taught me a lot about myself. The biggest lesson is my worth.

I’m worth the very best.

The kindest relationships, the most nourishing food, the warmest hearth fire, the most fulfilling jobs, the most beautiful art. And the very best copal, all of it every time.

Wherever you may be in your journey of addiction, sobriety, vagueness, confusion, and eventually crystal clarity; I hope you start with the best. You are so worth it.

With love,

Cindy
