This is Where the Women Come In

TL;DR - The women surrounding Jesus helped him become the Christ, let’s talk about it in my new workshop “The Gospel of John Unbound.” See you there!

I always forget that Easter morning is just the beginning of a whole Easter season.

After the incredible buildup of Lent followed by Holy Week, Easter seems like the grand finale. My God! He died then came back! It was glorious and mysterious and really, really bright!

From there, the disciples become apostles, no longer following Jesus but travelling the ancient world and sharing the good news. Peter eventually sets up a church, the Roman empire co-opts it, and away we go.

Except that’s the men’s story.

As is our human custom, we’ve cut out the women’s part in the whole thing.

In fact, the women’s part might actually be the whole thing. Let’s start with this fact: in each and every one of the four gospels it’s women who first encounter Jesus.

It’s women who go seeking him beyond the disaster of crucifixion. It’s women who recognize and believe it’s actually him. It’s women who tell the other male disciples to quit being sad sacks and come see the miracle Jesus was talking about the whole time.

You could reasonably argue that the men wouldn’t even have known Jesus was back unless the women told them. And even then they still don’t believe them.

“Another Corner” by Wendy Montero

The most powerful post-resurrection encounter is in John.

First, Mary goes into a graveyard while it’s still dark. I mean, talk about courage. She sees an open grave and missing body and runs back to get the other disciples.

There’s a hilarious little bit where John says he’s the disciple who runs the fastest, him and Peter then look in the tomb and see nothing, and they go back to the hotel.

Mary doesn’t give up that easily. She stands crying in the garden then returns to the empty grave and starts getting mouthy with some angels. Jesus sneaks up behind her and asks her why she’s crying. In the scripture she assumes he’s the gardner and asks him where the body is.

Here’s the part most people miss:

Assuming he’s the gardener is not a case of mistaken identity.

This little bit of dialogue is a test. She assumes the highest - that Jesus has become the one who brings and tends to all life in the Garden of Eden reopened - but asks him a trick question to see if he’s really made it all the way.

He responds simply with her name and she knows he is the great teacher - “Rabboni” - fulfilled.

You see, this isn’t the first time a resurrection like this has happened. Although it is the most famous today.

The ancient world was full of enlightened beings, powerful spirits, and divine teachers all the way back to Isis and Osiris who restored life to Earth.

And Mary Magdalene, as I’ve shared before, was not just a basic prostitute in debt to Jesus for saving her. These two together were advanced healers in sacred partnership in service to all life on Earth starting with the resurrection in the garden.

From there, Jesus and Mary M follow the ancient formula for re-seeding Earth with eternal life. Jesus makes his appearances then is taken up into the field of Christ Consciousness (i.e. our own enlightened hearts). Mary begins a long career of teaching the remaining disciples - oh yeah, that gospel was for sure cut out of the canon - and they both continue the legacy of the first morning in the garden even to this day.

So keep this in mind over the next few weeks. Easter Sunday was just the beginning and more shall always be revealed.

MODULE TWO: BORN FROM ABOVE

Two of the most beloved scenes in John's Gospel happen back to back and they couldn't be more different.

Nicodemus, a powerful religious insider, comes to Jesus in secret at night and leaves confused. The Samaritan woman, a stranger and outsider, meets Jesus in broad daylight and becomes the Gospel's first evangelist.

Together they teach us that spiritual awakening is not about credentials or status. It is a new way of seeing that arrives like the waters of birth: totally transforming.

Students will gain:

  • Freedom from the idea that spiritual awakening requires proper behavior or beliefs

  • A practice for releasing inherited perceptions, family religion, spiritual dogma

  • Understanding of why the Samiritan woman is the first to receive Jesus’ revelation

  • Practical tools for finding your inner spiritual authority and letting go of others’ religious rules
