Mary Magdalene: Healer and Kingmaker
Mary Magdalene; the most maligned healer in the history of the Abrahamic faiths.
Is she the sinful prostitute in need of saving by a holy man? Is she the demon-riddled peasant woman? Is she the meek and obedient disciple of Christ who hangs out in graveyards?
Obviously not or I wouldn’t be so obsessed with her, no offense to the demon-riddled. No, Mary Magdalene as I’ve come to learn is a healer just as powerful as Chist himself offering protection against a demon’s return once it had been removed.
I first became interested in Mary M when a modern day healer introduced me to spikenard.
For those unfamiliar, Nepalese spikenard oil comes from the roots of a plant that only grows in the high altitude Himalayas. It’s known as the lotus of the sky because although the plant grows at high altitudes in holy mountains - symbolic of being close to high levels of consciousness - it’s the roots that hold the medicine.
In other words, what good is your enlightenment if you’re not also grounded in present time reality, otherwise known as spiritual bypassing. Just like the lotus, if you don’t have your roots in the cloudy mud, the flower can’t bloom.

My healer asked if I liked the smell of spikenard before anointing me on my temples, heart, and hands.
At the time, I was actually repulsed by the smell thought I’ve come to love it. Spikenard is earthy, woody and sweet in a rotting soil kind of way. But then this healer reminded me that spikenard was the same oil that Mary M dumped a whole alabaster jar of on Jesus’ feet the week before his crucifixion.
He said she did this because spikenard was used to anoint ancient kings as a kind of test. You see, spikenard, being a hardy no-bullshit enlightened kind of plant, has this knack of stripping one of everything not in integrity in their life and fortifying everything that is.
This is what makes spikenard such healing medicine.
It’s anti-microbial, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, relieves insomnia, balances digestion, strengthens hair skin and nails, and - probably the reason it’s Mary’s medicine - heals the womb in all ways from post-partum emotional trauma to menstrual cramps. Everything not in integrity with one’s highest health is quickly removed and balanced by this amazing oil.
In addition to all these things, Mary used it to anoint, bless and seal in the good healings of Christ. Every healer in every tradition knows that it’s as important to refill your healee/client/student with the good things after you take out the bad, otherwise those demons will come right back in as soon as you’re done. I’m speaking only partly metaphorically here.

So what kind of healing was Mary doing when she poured so much spikenard on Jesus’ feet?
First, it’s worth knowing just how much she used. A half ounce bottle of real spikenard will cost you anywhere from $60-$90 today. She used a whole pound of spikenard which would cost around $2560 so you get an idea of why the other disciples lost their minds when she did this.
She probably poured out a whole year’s salary, or the equivalent of a woman’s entire dowry, onto Christ’s feet. Why? Because as his co-healer, friend, and lifetimes-long companion she needed to make sure that absolutely everything in his life was protected, healed, and in integrity for the trial to come.
Because of this astounding spiritual lineage, I often use spikenard in my healings today.
I use it when someone is struggling with intrusive thoughts, or has been haunted by their past, or is ready to take the next big step in their life and they need courage and strength.
I use it when I know I’m about to do something difficult but worthy. I always carried some on me during the 2020 protests and I often have some in my bag at work for those times when residents are taking their last breath and need help through the portal.
Spikenard is one of the cornerstones of my healing practice.
So I’m thrilled to share everything I know about Mary Magdalene’s medicine (which is so much more than I can fit her) in my newest course: The Foundations of How to Be a Healer.
How’s that for a buried lede? ;)
