A Magnet is a Stone with Love

In ancient Chinese, the word for magnet translates as ‘a stone with love.’ This concept comes from the Chinese Taoist tradition of people who simply studied nature and the universe to figure out how things worked within us; our bodies, our spirits, our emotions, our diseases, and our healing.

In my teachers’ tradition, love is one of the three building blocks of the universe. It’s the one that holds everything together, kind of like the glue between truth and energy. Those are the other two building blocks of course. All three are pumped into your heart and through your body every second of every day of your life through the sinoatrial node.

The SA node is that little electrical box that sits on top of your heart and fires electricity through your body to make your heart beat and your blood zoom through your tissues carrying those three building blocks to every part of your body. It’s the spark of life, the fire within that we greet when we say namaste to each other. And love? It’s the thing that holds the body together as it expresses and moves and dances and grieves and grows and dies.

So it makes sense that a magnet is a stone with love. In my Christian Mystical tradition, love is know as eros, which is the root word for eroticism. Kinda sexy today but the ancient meaning was something akin to a longing for union with the Other, a magnetic attraction, that can only be satisfied by God.

It’s what St. Augustine was actually talking about when he recommended celibacy and chastity, in a way. It’s not that he suggested we shouldn’t have sexual love, but rather that our sexuality was so powerful and so effective at creating miracles that it’s really best to make sure it’s always pointed at Spirit, even when you’re with another mere mortal, which I hope you are often.

Personally, I’ve found my heart itself is a fantastic magnet, much like the new-agers always suggest. Yes, yes. I know I myself could easily be mistaken for a new-ager but really I’m more into the ancient mysteries, which are making quite a comeback.

But when I fill the love-stone of my heart with alegria, songs, peace, curiosity, possibility, milagritos, and most of all gratitude I discover that’s exactly what is ‘erotically’ drawn to me. Again, I know how new-agey this sounds. But the truth is I do this and notice people smiling and saying hello to me, asking about me or what I’m wearing or doing, long lost friends contacting me, animals drawn to me (not a fan, but it happens), and babies…. no just kidding, babies are already 10x more magical than me; I’m not special to them.

Most of what I use my love-stone for, though, is to shine on my clients. I’ve been taught that there’s a particular kind of healing frequency that the human heart is very good at transmitting (yes, it’s love!). It kind of becomes a spotlight that you can shine on someone or something who needs blessing, just to be reminded of their divinity in a way that heals everything.

And what better magnet could there be than the heart, so perfectly full at all times of truth, love, and the complete energy of the universe in every heart beat.

All my heartbeats for you, dear friend.
