Jane Doe, Hang in There Sister
“The Six Swans” by P.J. Lynch
Jane,
Wherever you are, whoever you are, whatever you’re doing today; hang in there sister. I don’t even really have words to imagine what you must be going through right now, but I’m gonna try to speak because you tried to speak too.
I bet, back in 2024 after that awful night that you were just hoping for some acknowledgment at the very least. I imagine you wanted some kind of care, healing, and repair from the people who hurt you.
When that wasn’t forthcoming - and we know you tried - you went to the school hoping maybe they could help. We all know what happened there.
I can’t imagine what the last two years have been like for you. I heard you dropped out of school and that you haven’t been back. I’m sure that’s the least of the collateral damage you’ve experienced but it made me so goddamn mad to hear.
You deserve whatever education you want. You deserve to be young and experiment sexually and see what it’s like to alter your consciousness with drugs and alcohol. I also used to do that, and it helped me learn who I was, what was really important, and a whole bunch of other things.
You deserve to be cared for during those wild years in particular and you deserve people who will protect you, appreciate you, admire you, and support you. If those boys, that frat house, the school, the police or anyone did something to you that made you feel shame, guilt, embarrasment, or pain; well that shit is a stain on their souls, not yours.
I’m sure you didn’t imagine the insane international firestorm of rage and blame and denial that has come from your experience. I’m sure you didn’t imagine the death threats and the threats of violence and the fear and the stress you may now be living with.
Maybe all you wanted was an apology, help paying for whatever treatment you need, and your money back from Cornell. I hope you get all of that and more.
And I hope you remember, Jane, that you are and always will be an eternally worthy soul. More than that, an eternally worthy human. There is nothing and no one in the universe who could ever take that from you. Your worthiness is unfuckwithable.
Hang in there sister. As my teachers told me, the worst thing is not the last thing. We’re with you.
With fierce support and endless kindness,
Rev. Cindy
