“Hopi Madonna and Child” by Fr. John Giuliani
I’m no Chani Nicholas but I do have my own kind of strange esoteric astrology.
For us Bible nerds, I’m always following along with the liturgical calendar. This is the 3-year cycle of scriptural readings that almost every Protestant church preaches from year after year. Every week you get an excerpt from the Hebrew Testament, the Gospels, and the Epistles; YHWY, Yeshua, and sometimes Paul.
Then I follow the Wheel of the Sun covering the four directions as taught to me by the Power Path folks in Santa Fe. Start in the East with springtime and sunrise, South for the noonday summertime, West for fall and sunset, and North for that deep midnight winter.
This year it all coincides with maybe one of the most consequential elections of my voting lifetime; anitfa midterms.
Let’s see how this little theology nerd’s astrology fits together.
First, thank fucking God for the blue tsunami. Thank God for the indigenous women, the black women, the Muslim men, the queer folks. Thank God they’re in office, and really good offices at that. Thank God for the Navajo nation electing their first female president. Oh sweet baby Jesus thank God.
Thank God for Zohran Mamdani bringing at least one US city into the 21st century just by fixing potholes and providing childcare, among other long-promised-yet-always-unfulfilled Democratic Party promises. Plus, this dude knows how to leverage social media like nobody’s business.
Maybe the world isn’t going to be crushed by endless genocide, rogue AIs, and monstrous water-destroying data centers.
Maybe there’s a path and someway somehow it’s not over yet. And as writer Emily Graf, Ilana Glazer, and Erica Chidi remind me, doomerism is an incredibly misogynistic idea.
You wanna fix the world? Hand it back to women; black, indigenous, brown women in particular. And we’ve started to do just that.
Then we also have November 1st, All Saints day, Samhain.
In the Christian churches this is the day we remember those who have died and are now counted among the great cloud of witnesses circumferenced ‘round about. These are the ancestors who come to visit us as the veil thins.
In the ancient Celtic tradition this is the day of Cailleach’s Reign. She is the Goddess of Winter and on November 1st She guides the Banshees; the riders of the final hunt who search for souls to transport to the Land of Shadows.
She is a Crone par excellence and we could really use a death crone right now.
Next, the Spirit of the North makes His entrance on November 1st.
This is the spirit of wintertime, darkness, cold, and great spiritual challenges. This is also the time when we gather around the fire as leaders, elders, and true community. When we prepare ourselves to face the dangerous elements and learn to see in the dark.
Winter is the time of effortless power, dynamic flow, and perfect timing. This is the completion of the Wheel of the Sun and what we’ve been training for all year.
And as for the scripture? This year is the beatitudes and the saints yet to come.
On the morning of November 1st - as the Spirit of the North rushed in, as Cailleach opened Her death portal and brought in the crone’s hunt, as the electorate began casting their ballots for regime change - ministers all around the world preached the beatitudes.
They preached on behalf of the poor in spirit, those who mourn, those who hunger and thirst. They preached for the merciful, the peacemakers, and those who are falsely persecuted.
They called upon the name of a revolutionary indigenous undocumented day laborer - Yeshua ben Yosef Himself - to bring down Cesar and lift up the oppressed. Or at least that’s what I would have preached.

Friends, we are in the time of power.
We are surrounded by the spirits of the liberated ones, guided by the revolutionaries and freedom fighters of all walks of life. Women are rising and rising quickly, and the Holy Spirit of Life stirs and moves in all places within and beyond us.
I don’t know what the future holds or how far this blue tsunami will take us. But I do know that the greatest force on earth is people, individually and communally.
My whole practice is predicated on the idea that we humans are limitless and powerful beyond measure. And I hope you feel that way today. I hope you know deep in your ancient bones the truth of your own unstoppable radiance.
Today I want you to remember that you, yes you, are the open door which no one can shut.
May it be so.
